CAIRO — At least 93 people, including 20 children, were killed or went missing, and dozens more were hurt after an Israeli airstrike hit a residential building in Beit Lahiya, northern Gaza, on Tuesday, according to Gaza’s health ministry.
Rescue workers say more victims may still be trapped under the rubble. Emergency teams can’t reach them due to ongoing danger in the area.
U.S. officials have expressed deep concern. Matthew Miller, a U.S. State Department spokesperson, called it a “horrifying incident” and said they’re reaching out to Israel to understand what happened, noting that many of the dead were reported to be children.
The United Nations Human Rights Office is calling for a transparent investigation, calling the attack one of the deadliest in months. Video footage from the scene showed bodies wrapped in blankets and survivors being pulled from the wreckage as neighbors worked to help.
Meanwhile, Gaza’s health ministry reports that medical care is becoming harder to access as doctors have been forced to leave the nearby Kamal Adwan Hospital.
With continuing fighting across northern Gaza, the situation has become even harder. Emergency services said 100,000 people in Beit Lahiya and nearby towns are trapped without food or medical supplies.
