ASEAN Needs Better Engagement with People, Says SecGen Kao

Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, the Secretary-General of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), said that the people in ASEAN countries need to know more about the good things the organization is doing for them. Speaking during the 8th ASEAN Media Forum, Kao explained that although ASEAN has made progress in communicating with the public, many people still don’t understand how it helps their lives.

He emphasized the need to improve how ASEAN shares information so that everyone can appreciate its work. He said, “We need to better explain how ASEAN brings people together, solves problems, and creates opportunities for everyone.” He believes that teaching people about ASEAN will help them feel proud and connected to the region.

Dr. Kao also pointed out that with so much information available today, it’s easy for people to be confused by false or misleading news. He said it’s important for the media to work together with ASEAN to help people understand the truth and avoid misinformation. “Media and journalism play a big role in making sure people know what’s real and what’s not,” he added.

In today’s world, social media is often the main source of information, but this can lead to problems when false stories spread quickly. Kao said that it’s important for journalists to focus on truth and facts so that people are not misled.

In her speech, Nicole Stechmann, from the German Embassy, agreed and said that quality journalism is key. She said, “Good journalism helps people understand the world and empowers them to make better choices.” She reminded everyone that good journalism helps protect people from the dangers of fake news.

Kao ended his message by stressing the importance of connecting people across Southeast Asia and beyond, creating new opportunities for growth and learning.
