The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) and the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) started the electrical audit of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 on Friday.
In a statement, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said the audit is expected to be completed in three weeks, according to MIAA officer-in-charge Bryan Co.
Co said that once the audit is concluded, the MIAA will be able to determine the equipment needed to make NAIA Terminal 3’s power system reliable and resilient.
MIAA will also determine the timeline and the required budget for procuring critical components of its electrical facilities and generator sets, as well as implementing the necessary power systems upgrade at Terminal 3.
“Yes, kailangan naming bumili or mag lease ng additional generators and we are discussing with stakeholders and that’s the time na madetermine kung magkano ang kailangang budget,” Co said.
MIAA is said to be exploring the option of leasing generator sets to increase the capacity of Terminal 3’s backup power.
“The audit is expected to assist MIAA in ensuring reliability of its power supply and prioritize major components for the system upgrade of its existing electrical facilities,” DOTr noted.
On Monday, May 1, 2023, dozens of flights were canceled due to a power outage that hit NAIA.
According to Meralco manager Noel Espiritu, the power went out as the circuit breaker was tripped due to a temporary overflow of the current, as he cited a “fault current.”–Sherylin Untalan/LDF, GMA Integrated News
