Eight Filipino-Americans are stepping up to run for different government roles in the upcoming US elections, with some hoping to make history.
Steven Raga, a New York State Assemblymember, is aiming to keep his spot representing District 30 in Queens, New York. In California, Jessica Calazo, who worked with Attorney General Rob Bonta, is running for the California Assembly.
Ysabel Jurado is seeking a seat on the City Council in Los Angeles County, while Christopher Cabaldon is going for a position in the California State Senate. Angelito Tenorio is hoping to join the Wisconsin State Assembly. Meanwhile, Todd Gloria is running to be mayor of San Diego, and Juslyn Manalo is seeking re-election as mayor of Daly City.
As early voting wraps up, turnout this year is a bit lower than 2020’s record-breaking numbers, with over 72 million early voters reported so far. New York City alone saw over 2 million early votes, but that’s down from 8.6 million in 2020.
The election will officially happen on November 5. Many voters, like Fil-Am nurse RR, shared their views: “I’m supporting Kamala Harris because women should have control over their own health choices. It’s not just about politics—it’s about respecting people’s rights.”
Both Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are in the final stages of their campaigns. Trump is rallying support in Pennsylvania, while Harris is meeting with students in Michigan. The race is tight, with big issues like the economy, immigration, and international conflicts at the forefront.
