A heartwarming act of compassion was announced as 220 Filipinos detained in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) were granted pardon, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA). This gesture was made in celebration of UAE’s 53rd National Day on December 2, 2024.
A Result of Strong Friendship
DFA Undersecretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro highlighted that the pardon reflects the strong friendship between the Philippines and the UAE. She credited this development to the recent meeting between President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, during Marcos’ visit in November.
Processing Their Return Home
The Philippine Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the DFA are now working tirelessly to complete the necessary documents and administrative requirements. This effort ensures the immediate return of the pardoned Filipinos to their families in Manila.
A Message of Gratitude
President Marcos expressed his deep gratitude to the UAE leadership for their kindness:
“We extend our heartfelt thanks to His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum for this compassionate gesture.”
The President assured that the Philippine government is focused on processing the required papers for the freed Filipinos as swiftly as possible.
A History of Generosity
This isn’t the first time the UAE has extended such generosity. In June 2024, 143 Filipinos detained in the UAE were also pardoned on the occasion of Eid’l Adha.
Why Were They Detained?
According to Lazaro, the pardoned Filipinos were detained for various offenses. However, this act of clemency gives them a chance to start anew.
This heartwarming development is a testament to the enduring friendship between the two nations, offering hope and a fresh start to many Filipinos abroad.
