2 Filipino Sisters Die in Honolulu Fireworks Blast, Says Family

HONOLULU, HAWAII — A New Year’s celebration turned into tragedy as two Filipino sisters were among three fatalities in a fireworks explosion in Honolulu. The heartbreaking incident, confirmed by a family member, also left multiple family members injured.

Victims Identified

The sisters were identified as Carmelita Turalva Benigno and Nelly Turalva Ibarra, according to Carmelita’s nephew, Rylan Benigno, who shared the news with GMA Integrated News.

The blast also severely injured several of their loved ones:

  • Carmelita’s son and daughter
  • A niece
  • A three-year-old grandchild

All are currently hospitalized with burn injuries.

What Caused the Explosion?

Authorities say the explosion was triggered by a type of firework known as a “cake,” a cluster of tubes that can shoot up to 50 rockets into the air. The incident has been described as the worst fireworks-related tragedy in Hawaii in 14 years.

More than 30 people were injured, but authorities have not yet released the names or a full count of those affected.

A Call for Help

Amid the grief, Rylan Benigno has made an emotional appeal for assistance. He asked for prayers and financial support for his family and other victims struggling to recover from the tragedy.

The family has also set up a GoFundMe page to help cover medical expenses for the victims, many of whom remain in critical condition.

Investigation Underway

The Philippine Consulate in Honolulu is coordinating with local police to determine if other Filipino nationals were impacted. However, due to the ongoing investigation, police have not disclosed detailed information about the victims.

The consulate assured the public that they are monitoring the situation closely and are ready to assist if needed.

“Since the case is still under investigation, information cannot be disclosed on the identities of the victims,” the consulate said.

Calls for Stricter Regulations

In response to the tragedy, the Office of the Honolulu Mayor has vowed to enforce stricter measures to prevent the entry of illegal fireworks and firecrackers into the city.

Remembering the Victims

This devastating incident has left a community in mourning. As families grieve the loss of their loved ones and fight for the recovery of the injured, they ask for compassion and support from the global community.

If you wish to help, consider donating to the victims’ GoFundMe page or offering prayers during this difficult time.
