17 Filipino Seafarers Freed and Safely Return Home

Seventeen brave Filipino seafarers who were held hostage by Houthi rebels in Yemen for over a year have finally made it back home to the Philippines. Their safe return was proudly announced by the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA).

A Joyful Reunion at the Airport
On Thursday night, at exactly 9:31 p.m., the seafarers landed at Ninoy Aquino International Airport aboard Oman Air Flight 843, which departed from Muscat, Oman. The scene at the airport was emotional as families eagerly awaited their loved ones, who had been away and in captivity for far too long.

Government officials, including DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac, Foreign Secretary Enrique Manalo, and Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista, were present to personally welcome the returning heroes. Their presence underscored the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and welfare of overseas Filipino workers.

Support and Debriefing
Upon arrival, the seafarers were provided with a debriefing by representatives from the DMW and OWWA. This session aimed to help them process their ordeal and ensure they received the necessary support for their physical and emotional well-being.

Families Reunited
The highlight of the evening was the heartwarming reunion between the seafarers and their families. Tears of joy and tight embraces filled the airport as the seafarers were finally back in the arms of their loved ones after a harrowing year in captivity.

A Grateful Nation
The return of these seafarers marks the end of a long and challenging journey. It also serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by Filipino workers abroad and the importance of collective efforts to protect their welfare.

The government vows to continue its support for the seafarers and their families as they transition back to their normal lives. This is a story of resilience, hope, and the enduring love of family and country.
