115,000 Families Still in Shelters After Big Storms, Says DSWD

More than 115,000 families are staying in temporary shelters across eight regions in Luzon and Visayas after powerful storms swept through the country, according to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

These regions include Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, Bicol, Cordillera, and Eastern Visayas. Families are currently staying in 3,267 evacuation centers, the DSWD shared during a public hearing.

DSWD spokesperson Irene Dumlao reported that over 400,000 food packs have already been distributed to the affected areas. This aid is worth a total of ₱125 million and aims to provide much-needed relief for families displaced by tropical cyclones Nika, Ofel, and Pepito.

In Catanduanes, one of the hardest-hit provinces, Super Typhoon Pepito caused severe damage to around 500 homes. Thankfully, no casualties were reported. The DSWD pre-positioned 10,000 food packs in the area before the storm and has since delivered an additional 45,000 packs to support affected families.

The government continues to provide assistance and monitor the recovery of these regions as families work to rebuild their lives.
